Today's blog topic is keeping kids off drugs. I believe in telling kids at a young age that drugs are harmful. I was taught at home that smoking "turned your lungs black and made them cry". At a young age I think this quick explination worked for me. I think programs like D.A.R.E. are great for grade schoolers. What really got my attention was my high school freshman health class. Having to do research papers as well as seeing actual evidence and pictures of diseases caused by drugs ultimately made me completely not interested in trying anything.
Unfortunately, there is only so much the school system can do. Peer pressure has a big impact on kids. Sometimes actions speak better than words. What you and your family do at home is what your kids absorb.
I think keeping kids involved in sports, summer camps and church activites is important to learn how to make friends and develop a good circle of friends to enter high school with. This can bring support, positive outlooks, and gives them good socializing skills. Hopefully this will help them better cope with the always difficult high school drama.

I believe educating children about the dangers of drugs is a very good, yet heroic, thing to do, especially with the D.A.R.E. program, which I remember taking in grade school. I know I will teach my kids one day about drugs and the D.A.R.E. program so they can live healthier lives in a better place.
ReplyDeleteI agree that programs like D.A.R.E. are a good way to start teaching kids early about saying no. I think doing a research paper, and seeing graphic images also helps a lot. Family is also very important, having good relationships with your parents makes it easier to talk to them about troubles you may be having, hopefully this will prevent any "experimenting". I would say your last paragraph is right on, I feel like most people use drugs and alcohol to cope with life. Having a good support system is crucial to preventing or eliminating small issues which could later turn into big problems.
ReplyDelete"turned your lungs black and made them cry" that is definitely a good way to get a kids attention when they are younger!! but yes I agree that the D.A.R.E. programs are an excellent program for elementary school kids. Sports, summer camps, and church activities are a very good way to help kids stay off drugs and wanting to experiment with them!
ReplyDeleteGood blog i liked the part on keeping kid involved in something such as sports or any activity.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you. Keeping your kids involved with sports and always busy is the key! If you are too busy with extra curricular activities and your studies, then they won't really have time to think about wanting to take drugs. Great post.
